Nearly all project managers have some form of project management certification. As the pendulum of power is now with the company acquiring the service, this means that there is a much higher level of accountability about the success of that project than before. So it is paramount for services led organisations to ensure that their staff and project managers are trained to the highest level possible. A great project manager is a Jack of all trades, beyond the text books and formal project management certification, they will be skilled communicators, great at negotiating and be able to identify and solve problems long before they are spotted by others. They will also be required to excel and possess the following skills: ? Recognize when and how to improve a teams input and output. ? Understand how and when to delegate and the impact this will have on your project ? Establish exactly how to organize a project with emphasis on being able to organize and articulate this project to others. ? Ability to inspire team members, team sponsors, executives and suppliers. ? Become the bridge between the people that do and the people that need. Understand why the project sponsor requires this work and what the ultimate pay off is. ? Understand and leverage performance management, not just during the project but also when the project is complete. Providing tools to monitor the success of the project is a classy way to demonstrate that a project had a positive impact towards to original objectives. ? By prudent, skilled and realistic when budgeting. Be sure not to budget under the required amount. ? Be expert in time management and ensuring that a project is rolled out on time and within budget. The above skills are the tip of the iceberg, these should be seen as an absolute minimum and just enough chips to get you onto the table. All project managers continue to learn new skills, they continue to work on their soft skills, try to understand the business in more detail and are always looking at ways to make sure that their next project is even more successful. Remember, successful project management certification is just the beginning of a long journey. You may wish to specialize. If this is the case, more exams and certifications will follow.
