A Project Manager is a very responsible individual and as the name suggests takes responsibility for the rolling out of a given project. Exceptional project management skills are very rare and in high demand, as a result there has been a recent surge in people attending accredited project management training classes. More and more companies are only accepting accredited project managers into their teams. By being accredited, a Project Manager is stating categorically that they are qualified to manage a project. They are saying that they have taken and passed rigorous examinations and understand what is involved and how to make a project a successful one. They are also saying that they have a wide skill base, they are proficient in managing people, processes and suppliers. This is a very rare combination of skills which often results in the very best project managers being paid very handsomely. The recent drive to push accredited project management training is seen as a positive step in most industries, it means that there are clear guidelines of exactly what skills are required and ensures that each accredited project manager has the basic skill requirements for a job. It also ensures that there a common rules that all accredited project managers understand and adhere to. That said, it is very important to balance these new found accreditations with actual experience of high pressure projects. One sector that nearly always requests proof that a project manager has attended an accredited project management training class is the public sector. As more and more government and public IT projects hit the headlines for the wrong reasons, the public sector are keen to keep the accountability and success of a project with a project manager and their employer. Another strong reason for accredited project management training is that it helps to provide a common language across industries. This means that particular methodologies are used, so instead of companies having to reinvent the wheel each time they begin a new project, they can leverage tried and tested processes. These processes become the “Industry Standard” or “De-Facto standard” way of doing things. One example of this is how a project management process called PRINCE2 is now commonly used throughout different industries. (c) eProjectCentral.com |
